NLP Therapy- What is it?

NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) identifies the thinking patterns that get in your way, and offers ways to change your thinking, that changes your life. NLP presupposes that your way of seeing things is unique and useful to you, or was useful in some context, and we start from there.
NLP is a way to expand your experience of yourself and enjoy yourself more. NLP enables you to know how you do things that are effective, in order to repeat them, and to know how you do things you would rather not, in order to stop, and replace old habits with new. NLP enables us to change our automatic behaviour and also to learn effective behaviour from others.
NLP enables us to open up to the possibility of seeing the world as others see it, making room for multiple options, and frees us from the tyranny of being right or making others wrong. This increases our ability to be tolerant.
Over the years NLP has accumulated a set of presuppositions which add up to a philosophy or way of seeing and approaching the world that helps us be more effective. NLP draws on concepts from many areas of psychology and psychotherapy. It helps us to understand how and why we do what we do, and to change those behaviour and thinking patterns that are unhelpful. It also assists us to develop a greater sense of self-control, recognise our own best qualities, and use them well.
NLP Psychotherapy & Counselling (NLPt) is a specialised form of NLP, which is based on the idea that we “construct” our own reality. The NLPt therapist/counsellor works on the basis that each one of us builds our own unique “models” or “maps” of the world around us and, although such maps are genuine and real to us as individuals, no one’s “map” is fully able to represent the “real world”. Most elements of our “maps of the world” are useful and work well for us, but some of our beliefs and behaviour patterns get in the way of our own progress and can make us feel “stuck” or out of control. With NLPt, we can explore how people think in ways that are constructive and useful, model effective behaviours and identify successful strategies, and then apply these to improve our own lives.
